MISHIMA: A LIFE IN FOUR CHAPTERS

Paul Schrader | Francis Ford Coppola & George Lucas Present

Cannes Official Selection

A striking first‑release French theatrical poster for Mishima: Une vie en quatre chapitres (Paul Schrader, 1985). Printed for the film’s Competition slot at the 1985 Cannes Film Festival, this tall, narrow “pantalon” (door‑panel) format was produced in far smaller numbers than the standard French “Grande”.

Artwork – Intense red‑and‑black duotone portrait of Ken Ogata as Yukio Mishima, wearing a hachimaki emblazoned 七生報国 (“Serve the nation in seven lifetimes”).

Headline – “SÉLECTION OFFICIELLE ‑ FESTIVAL DE CANNES 1985”.

Tagline – “Le 25 Novembre 1970 l’écrivain le plus célèbre du Japon, Yukio Mishima, choqua le monde.”

Credits – © 1984 Warner Bros; printer’s mark “S.A. Lalande‑Courbet, Paris” lower right; distributed by Warner‑Columbia Film.

Rarity – Mishima was effectively banned in Japan until 1999; French door‑panels like this surfaced only in limited continental runs and are seldom seen on the market.

Machine‑folded on first issue (six horizontal & one vertical fold)
