MISHIMA: A LIFE IN FOUR CHAPTERS
Paul Schrader | Francis Ford Coppola & George Lucas Present
Cannes Official Selection
A striking first-release French theatrical poster for Mishima: Une vie en quatre chapitres (Paul Schrader, 1985). Printed for the film’s Competition slot at the 1985 Cannes Film Festival, this large “Grande” format (120 × 160 cm) was intended for outdoor billboards and metro kiosks and is much scarcer today than the smaller French “Moyenne”.
Artwork – Intense red-and-black duotone portrait of Ken Ogata as Yukio Mishima, wearing a hachimaki emblazoned 七生報国 (“Serve the nation in seven lifetimes”).
Headline – “SÉLECTION OFFICIELLE - FESTIVAL DE CANNES 1985”.
Tagline – “Le 25 Novembre 1970 l’écrivain le plus célèbre du Japon, Yukio Mishima, choqua le monde.”
Credits – © 1984 Warner Bros; printer’s mark “S.A. Lalande-Courbet, Paris” lower right; distributed by Warner-Columbia Film.
Rarity – Mishima was effectively banned in Japan until 1999; French Grandes were printed in limited numbers and are seldom encountered in such well-preserved condition.
