“Nagano 1998 — The XVIII Olympic Winter Games”, Official Olympic Winter Games Poster 1994, Ultra Rare B1 Size (c. 72.8 x 103cm)

Sale price $700.00

This is an official Nagano 1998 Winter Olympic Games poster, designed by acclaimed Japanese graphic designer Masuteru Aoba and first issued in 1994 in advance of the XVIII Olympic Winter Games, held in Nagano, Japan, from 7–22 February 1998.

Although the Nagano Winter Olympics took place in 1998, this specific poster was the first official poster released for the games and was published four years in advance.

Poster background
The Nagano 1998 Winter Olympics were the first Winter Games held in Japan since Sapporo 1972, and the official visual identity placed strong emphasis on nature, harmony, snow, mountain landscape, and quiet symbolism. This poster is one of the most elegant examples from the Nagano Olympic design programme, prioritising atmosphere and meaning over direct athletic imagery.

Poster design
A beautifully composed and highly refined Olympic design. Against a deep blue sky shifting into a radiant sunset, a lone thrush / songbird rests on a pair of black ski-pole grips, with the snow-covered mountains of Nagano softly silhouetted in the distance. The image expresses the central theme of the Games: coexistence between sport and nature.

The upper section carries the official Nagano 1998 Snowflower emblem, the bold white typography NAGANO 1998, the line THE XVIII OLYMPIC WINTER GAMES, and the Olympic rings. The composition is minimal, contemplative, and unmistakably Japanese in its restraint.

The Snowflower emblem itself combines the forms of a snowflake and mountain flower, with its colourful petals representing athletes in winter motion. Paired with the bird and ski poles, the design becomes a quiet visual statement about human activity within the natural world rather than above it.

For collectors of Olympic design, Japanese graphic design, Nagano 1998 memorabilia, and modern sports history, this is a particularly elegant and historically important piece.
