“Neon Genesis Evangelion” (新世紀エヴァンゲリオン / Neon Genesis Evangelion), Original Japanese Promotional Poster 1997, B2 Size (51 × 73 cm) P238

Sale price $150.00

This is an original Japanese B2 promotional poster issued in 1997 for Neon Genesis Evangelion, one of the most important and influential anime franchises of the 1990s. Unlike the darker, more apocalyptic theatrical campaign designs associated with Evangelion, this poster presents a rare and charming alternate vision of the series: intimate, domestic, and unexpectedly playful.

Film / series background
By 1997, Evangelion had already become a cultural phenomenon in Japan, moving beyond television into films, music, books, and a vast ecosystem of promotional material. What makes pieces like this especially appealing is that they show another side of the franchise: not the catastrophic scale of Angels and Evas, but the quieter character-driven world that made the series so emotionally resonant. Posters of this kind were produced as promotional items rather than standard theatrical one-sheets, and they are often far harder to find today in strong condition.

Poster design
A beautiful and highly unusual design built around a slice-of-life illustration of Shinji and Rei, with Shinji cutting Rei’s hair while she sits calmly holding Pen Pen. The enormous white ground gives the composition a clean, airy elegance, allowing the figures to stand out with remarkable clarity. Rei’s pale blue hair, Shinji’s casual hoodie and cap, and Pen Pen’s comic presence create a tone that is gentle, humorous, and completely different from the franchise’s more familiar imagery of anxiety and destruction. The simplicity is exactly what makes it so effective: it feels more like a character art print than a conventional anime poster, and it is exceptionally displayable.
