“Oldboy” (オールド・ボーイ), Original Release Japanese Movie Poster 2004, B2 Size (51 × 73 cm) O564

Sale price $200.00

This is an original Japanese B2 poster printed in 2004 for the first Japanese theatrical release of Oldboy, Park Chan‑wook’s legendary Korean revenge thriller.

Film background

Based on the manga of the same name, Oldboy follows Oh Dae‑su, an ordinary man abducted and imprisoned in a room for 15 years with no explanation. Suddenly released, he is given money, a phone and five days to uncover who imprisoned him and why. The film’s fusion of baroque violence, psychological mystery and operatic emotion made it a sensation worldwide, winning the Grand Prix at the Cannes Film Festival and cementing Park Chan‑wook as a major auteur.

Poster design

The Japanese B2 design is dominated by a huge magenta “clock” motif that frames a key image of Dae‑su and Mi‑do lying side by side on an ornate floor. The title OLDBOY cuts through the clock in English, with the Japanese title beneath in bold pink characters. A bright yellow tagline at the centre poses the film’s central question—“Who are you? Why did you imprison me for 15 years?!”—while smaller portraits of the main characters smoulder at the bottom. The design perfectly captures the film’s sense of time, obsession and impending violence.

Original Japanese posters for Oldboy are keenly sought after, particularly since the film has become a cornerstone title for fans of Korean cinema and neo‑noir revenge films. Many surviving posters show heavy wear from usage in small specialist cinemas.
