“On the Comet” (彗星に乗って), Original Japanese Movie Poster 1987, B2 Size (51 × 73 cm) ZA293

Sale price $130.00

This is an original Japanese B2 poster printed in 1987 for the first Japanese theatrical release of On the Comet (原題 Na kometě), the 1970 Czechoslovak fantasy film directed by Karel Zeman and distributed in Japan by Towa.

Film background
Based on Jules Verne’s novel Off on a Comet, Zeman’s film blends live action with stylised sets and animation to tell the story of a North African province torn from Earth’s surface and carried through space on the back of a comet. Its inhabitants, including a young soldier and the woman he loves, find themselves adrift in a surreal cosmic landscape, grappling with war, politics and romance under impossible circumstances. The film is admired for its inventive visuals that echo 19th‑century engravings and for Zeman’s playful, dreamlike approach to Verne’s adventure.

Poster design
The Japanese B2 design is especially striking, featuring a vivid, almost psychedelic illustration by celebrated artist Koji Suzuki (スズキコージ), credited on the artwork under his alias “Cohjizukin” and dated 1987. A mysterious woman in a scarlet dress stands centre‑stage against a blazing orange sky, while fire‑breathing lizards, dinosaurs and strange cityscapes swirl around her. The looming comet and moon hover overhead, and tiny figures, tents and towers crowd the lower half of the composition, capturing the film’s mix of catastrophe, fantasy and dark humour. The hand‑painted style and off‑beat character designs make this Japanese‑only artwork a favourite among collectors of Zeman and Suzuki alike.
