“Only the Strong Survive” / 「ソウル・サヴァイヴァー」, Original Japanese Release Movie Poster 2003, B2 Size (51 × 73 cm) ZA877

Sale price $110.00

This is an original Japanese B2 theatrical poster printed for the Japanese release of Only the Strong Survive, issued in Japan under the title 「ソウル・サヴァイヴァー」 / Soul Survivor. Directed by acclaimed documentary filmmakers D. A. Pennebaker and Chris Hegedus, the film celebrates the enduring power of classic American soul, R&B, gospel, and funk performers.

A rich and energetic music-documentary poster, this Japanese design captures the emotional force of live performance and the cultural legacy of the great Stax, Motown, and Memphis soul artists.

Film background
Originally released in 2002 and shown in Japan in 2003, Only the Strong Survive brings together a remarkable roster of legendary performers whose voices helped define American soul music.

The film features Isaac Hayes, Jerry Butler, The Chi-Lites, Sam Moore, Ann Peebles, Wilson Pickett, Carla Thomas, Rufus Thomas, Mary Wilson, and others, combining live performances with interviews and intimate moments of reflection. Rather than presenting soul music as a closed historical chapter, the film shows these artists still performing with force, warmth, humour, and deep emotional authority.

Directed by D. A. Pennebaker and Chris Hegedus, the film continues their distinguished documentary tradition: direct, humane, performance-focused, and attentive to the lived presence of its subjects.

Poster design
The poster is built around a dark, stage-like background dotted with small starbursts, against which the featured performers appear in a dramatic collage of singing, movement, and live performance.

The top section carries a colourful horizontal billing band listing the featured artists, including Jerry Butler, The Chi-Lites, Isaac Hayes, Sam Moore, Ann Peebles, Wilson Pickett, Carla Thomas, Rufus Thomas, Mary Wilson, and others. Beneath this runs a strip of small film stills, reinforcing the documentary structure.

At left, the Japanese tagline reads:

「すべてはここから始まった。
—歌声は、時空を超えて生き続ける。」

“Everything started from here.
The singing voices continue to live on, transcending time and space.”

The lower section is dominated by expressive portraits of the performers singing into microphones, with the Japanese title 「ソウル★サヴァイヴァー」 printed in large stylised lettering above the English title ONLY THE STRONG SURVIVE. The warm gold, brown, and yellow typography gives the poster a distinctly musical, marquee-like quality.

Release note
This poster was printed for the film’s Japanese theatrical release campaign.

It is an original period Japanese cinema poster, not a later reproduction or commercial reprint.

Condition
Very good condition. A strong, attractive example with good colour, clear imagery, and very good overall display presence.

There are visible signs of age and handling consistent with an original theatrical poster. The poster nevertheless presents very well, particularly given the dark background and performance-based imagery.
