This is an original Japanese movie poster printed in 1981 for the first theatrical release of Otoko wa Tsurai Yo: Tora-san’s Love in Osaka (男はつらいよ 涙桜の恋の寅次郎), the 27th entry in Shochiku’s long-running and much-loved comedy series starring Kiyoshi Atsumi as the wandering peddler “Tora-san,” directed by Yoji Yamada.
Film background
Otoko wa Tsurai Yo began in 1969 and went on to become the world’s longest-running film series starring the same lead actor, with 48 installments released over a span of 25 years. Each film followed the misadventures of the kind-hearted but hapless Tora-san, who traveled across Japan selling his wares, reconnecting with his family in Shibamata, and inevitably falling in love with a new “Madonna” (leading lady) in each chapter.
In this 27th installment, released in 1981, Tora-san journeys to Osaka where he once again finds himself in a romantic entanglement, this time against the vibrant backdrop of the Kansai metropolis. Featuring Chieko Baisho as his long-suffering sister Sakura, the film blends humor, heart, and regional color, continuing the franchise’s enduring appeal to audiences across Japan.
Poster design
The 1981 Japanese B2 poster features a radiant portrait of Kiyoshi Atsumi in his iconic traveler’s attire, smiling warmly in front of the Osaka skyline and the famous Tsūtenkaku Tower. Above him looms the graceful visage of the Madonna character, reinforcing the romantic themes that defined the series. The bold red title lettering 「男はつらいよ」 ensures instant recognition, while the composition perfectly captures the light-hearted yet sentimental tone of the film.
