This is an original Japanese A2 promotional poster issued in 1989 by Namcot / Namco for the MSX2 release of Pac-Mania (パックマニア).
The poster itself carries the MSX2 and FM音源対応 markings and advertises the disk edition as scheduled for 16 March, with the ROM version announced as coming soon at ¥6,800. These printed details place the poster firmly within the game’s Japanese launch window, making it a highly specific piece of late-1980s Japanese home-computer advertising.
This is not a generic Pac-Man character poster. It is a Japanese advance-release / launch-period shop-display poster, produced to promote the MSX2 edition at retail. Its platform, sound, format, date, and price information give it strong period significance. For collectors, this makes it especially appealing: a vivid surviving example of Namco’s late-1980s Japanese home-computer marketing.
About the release
Released for Japanese MSX2 users in 1989, Pac-Mania adapted Namco’s 1987 arcade title for the home-computer market. The game returned to the classic dot-eating formula while introducing a more three-dimensional visual style and Pac-Man’s notable jump mechanic, which allowed him to leap over ghosts during play.
The MSX2 version was an important Japanese home-computer release, and this poster directly reflects that market, with prominent MSX2 branding and printed FM sound compatibility copy.
Poster design
The design is pure late-1980s Namcot: a vivid acid-green background, a large smiling Pac-Man leaping from a blue maze, bright red boots and gloves, comic-style speech balloons, and oversized English copy across the top.
The upper-left information box provides the platform and release details, while the large PAC-MANIA logo and bold blue パックマニア title anchor the poster unmistakably in the Japanese market. It is bright, graphic, playful, and immediately effective as a display piece.
