This is an original Japanese B1 theatrical poster printed for the first release of Pokémon the Movie: Destiny Deoxys (劇場版ポケットモンスター アドバンスジェネレーション 裂空の訪問者 デオキシス), released in Japan on 17 July 2004.
Produced during the hugely popular Pokémon Advanced Generation era, the film centres on the confrontation between the extraterrestrial Pokémon Deoxys and the legendary Rayquaza, with Ash, Pikachu, May, Max, Brock and the film’s new characters caught at the centre of the conflict.
This particular example is especially desirable because it is a large-format Japanese B1 and an authentic double-sided theatrical lightbox poster. Measuring approximately 72.8 × 103 cm, it has around twice the surface area of a standard Japanese B2 and was produced for prominent cinema display rather than ordinary retail sale.
Film background
Destiny Deoxys is the seventh theatrical Pokémon feature and the second produced under the Advanced Generation banner.
The story begins when a meteorite carrying the mysterious Pokémon Deoxys crashes into the polar regions. Its arrival brings it into immediate conflict with Rayquaza, guardian of the upper atmosphere.
Years later, Ash and his friends arrive in the technologically advanced LaRousse City, where they meet Tory Lund, a young boy traumatised by the original battle between the two Pokémon. When Deoxys reappears and begins taking control of the city, Rayquaza returns and the conflict escalates into a spectacular confrontation above the futuristic metropolis.
The film combines the franchise’s familiar themes of friendship, trust and coexistence with a stronger science-fiction atmosphere than many earlier Pokémon movies, using Deoxys’s extraterrestrial origin and LaRousse City’s automated technology to create one of the most distinctive environments of the early-2000s films.
Poster design
This Japanese B1 is dominated by an enormous image of Deoxys, whose central figure towers over the entire composition.
Multiple manifestations of Deoxys surround the main figure, emphasising the Pokémon’s extraordinary ability to alter its physical form. Its orange, turquoise and deep crimson colouring is amplified by brilliant white energy effects and a dark cosmic background.
Across the lower section, Rayquaza coils dramatically around the central cast, its vivid green body providing a powerful visual counterpoint to Deoxys above.

The design’s saturated reds, greens, blues and oranges, combined with the intense energy trails and planetary imagery, give the poster exceptional display impact at B1 scale.
Double-sided theatrical lightbox printing
A particularly important feature of this poster is that it is double-sided.
The reverse carries a mirrored version of the front artwork, clearly visible in the accompanying photograph. This is characteristic of genuine theatrical posters intended for illuminated cinema lightboxes.
When a conventional single-sided poster is backlit, strong illumination can wash out its colours. Double-sided theatrical posters solve this by printing a second, precisely aligned reversed image on the verso, increasing colour density when illuminated from behind.
The result is dramatically richer colour, deeper blacks and stronger highlights when displayed in a cinema lightbox.
This printing method is also an important indicator that the poster was produced as an official theatrical display asset rather than as a commercial souvenir or retail reprint.
About the Japanese B1 format
The Japanese B1 measures approximately 72.8 × 103 cm, making it substantially larger than the standard 51 × 73 cm Japanese B2.
B1 posters were generally reserved for major cinema lobbies, prominent advertising positions and illuminated display cases, and were consequently produced in significantly smaller quantities.
Double-sided B1 anime posters are particularly difficult to find because these large sheets were working cinema materials. Many were damaged during installation and removal, faded through prolonged illumination, or simply discarded once their theatrical campaigns ended.
For collectors of vintage Pokémon material, an original first-release double-sided B1 therefore represents a considerably scarcer proposition than the standard smaller-format posters commonly encountered.
Cultural significance
The Advanced Generation period represents one of the most nostalgic eras of early-2000s Pokémon.
Deoxys and Rayquaza subsequently became two of the franchise’s most recognisable legendary and mythical Pokémon, appearing extensively across games, trading cards, television, merchandise and later Pokémon media.
The film is also strongly associated with the Pokémon Ruby and Sapphire generation, making this original 2004 theatrical artwork especially attractive to collectors who grew up during the Game Boy Advance era.
The combination of Deoxys, Rayquaza, Ash, Pikachu, the complete Advanced Generation cast, large B1 scale and authentic double-sided cinema printing makes this an exceptional surviving piece of Pokémon theatrical history.
