“Project A-ko” (プロジェクトA子), Original Japanese First-Release Movie Poster 1986, B2 Size (51 × 73 cm) E62
This is an original Japanese B2 poster produced for the 1986 first theatrical release of Project A-ko. Directed by Katsuhiko Nishijima, with character designs and animation direction by Yuji Moriyama, the film opened in Japan on 21 June 1986, distributed by Shochiku-Fuji. Its combination of schoolgirl rivalry, extravagant mechanical destruction, and affectionate anime parody captures the exuberance of 1980s Japanese animation.
Film background
Set in a futuristic city rebuilt after a devastating meteor strike, Project A-ko follows the extraordinarily strong A-ko and her inseparable friend C-ko. Their school life becomes increasingly chaotic when wealthy technological genius B-ko decides she wants C-ko’s attention for herself, deploying elaborate machines against her seemingly indestructible rival.
The arrival of an alien spacecraft transforms their personal feud into a spectacular science-fiction adventure. Fast-paced slapstick and references to familiar anime conventions give the film its distinctive comic energy.
Poster design
The illustration places red-haired A-ko at the centre, charging forward with her fist extended, wearing her white-and-blue sailor uniform and red neckerchief. C-ko tumbles exuberantly through the air beside her, while B-ko, dressed in futuristic battle armour, towers over the upper-left composition.
Behind them, aircraft streak across a brilliant blue sky. Tilted buildings, heavily armed machines, tanks, and shattered pavement fill the surrounding scene, creating a dynamic contrast between the expressive characters and the densely detailed machinery.
The large 「プロジェクトA子」 logo sweeps across the bottom in glowing yellow, orange, and red. Immediately above it, the tagline 「時代は今!天下無敵の女子高生!!」 celebrates the film’s “invincible high-school girl.” It is a vibrant display piece that conveys the film’s playful, destructive spirit.
Condition
Excellent. Light handling creases, minor edge wear, and a few small marks are visible, particularly on the reverse. The colourful illustration remains strong and clear, and the poster will display beautifully framed.
