“Rebel Without a Cause” (理由なき反抗), Original Very Rare Japanese Speed Poster / Press-Sheet, Printed in 1955, Size (9.5" × 20" / approx. 25 × 51 cm) K220 A

Sale price $250.00

This is an original vintage Japanese press-sheet / speed-poster printed in 1955 for Nicholas Ray’s landmark youth drama Rebel Without a Cause (released in Japan as 理由なき反抗), starring James Dean, Natalie Wood, and Sal Mineo. The film opened in Japan in April 1956 (commonly listed as 18 April 1956, with some Japanese databases listing 5 April 1956).

Unlike standard theatrical posters, this scarce format was produced for cinema and trade use—combining bold key art on the front with dense Japanese promotional/editorial text on the reverse—making it a highly desirable piece of original period ephemera for James Dean collectors.

Poster design
The front is a classic, CinemaScope-era Japanese design featuring a full-colour image of Dean in the iconic red jacket, with the huge vertical title 理由なき反抗 in vivid red. The reverse side is a full information sheet—packed with Japanese text, illustrations, cast/production details, and small stills—an outstanding surviving example of mid-1950s Japanese studio publicity material.

It is over 70 years old!
