“She’s Gotta Have It” (シーズ・ガッタ・ハヴ・イット), Original Japanese First-Release Movie Poster 1987, B2 Size (51 × 73 cm) T275
This is an original Japanese B2 poster produced for the 1987 first Japanese theatrical release of Spike Lee’s She’s Gotta Have It. Originally released in America in 1986, this landmark of Black independent cinema introduced audiences to Lee’s distinctive blend of Brooklyn storytelling, sharp humour, and visual experimentation. The Japanese release was distributed by Cine Saison and KUZUI Enterprises.
Film background
Starring Tracy Camilla Johns as Nola Darling, the film follows a young Brooklyn artist balancing relationships with three very different men while defending her independence. Lee himself appears as the irrepressible Mars Blackmon, alongside Tommy Redmond Hicks and John Canada Terrell.
Shot primarily in black and white, the film combines direct addresses to the camera with inventive editing and intimate observations of neighbourhood life. Its success, including the Prix de la Jeunesse at Cannes, established Lee as a major new voice in American filmmaking.
Poster design
A brilliantly colourful composition places monochrome photographic portraits against a bright yellow maze of hand-drawn black lines. Nola’s large portrait dominates the lower centre, surrounded by her three suitors and smaller faces enclosed within pink, orange, and blue circles.
An orange-red border repeats “PLEASE BABY PLEASE” vertically in an eclectic mixture of patterned letters. Green edging and cream triangular teeth frame the entire design, while coloured maze lines continue across the figures’ black silhouettes.
The playful English title sits near the top, balanced by bold, angular Japanese lettering across the lower orange panel. Its exuberant colours and geometric patterns evoke the Memphis design movement, giving this Japanese release poster an unmistakable 1980s character.
Condition
Excellent, close to Near Mint. A beautifully preserved example with only very light handling wear. The vivid colours, crisp typography, and photographic portraits retain excellent display appeal.
