"Shura (修羅) — Demons" STB, Original Release Japanese Poster 1971, STB Tatekan Size (c. 51 × 145 cm) O350
This is an original Japanese STB (tatekan-style two-panel) poster printed in 1971 to promote Shura (修羅 / しゅら, “Demons”), written and directed by Toshio Matsumoto. The vertical copy beside the lovers roughly reads: 「嘘は許されぬもの…… 裏切られた愛の悲しみは、血汐に染めた紅の消ゆる末まで…… 愛と憎しみが生みだす、残酷と狂気の流血怨念劇。」 — “Lies cannot be forgiven… Betrayed love turns grief crimson to the very last fading drop of blood… a cruel, mad tale of bloodletting and vengeance born of love and hate.” The film adapts Tsuruya Namboku IV’s kabuki revenge play 盟三五大切 (Kamikakete Sango Taisetsu – “The Lover’s Pledge”), and was released in Japan through the Art Theatre Guild (ATG).
Key credits and notes:
• Director / Screenplay: Toshio Matsumoto (松本俊夫).
• Source: Tsuruya Namboku IV, Kamikakete Sango Taisetsu (with credit on the film also to Shūji Ishizawa).
• Starring: Katsuo Nakamura (as Gengobei), Yasuko Sanjo (as Koman), Jūrō Kara (as Sangorō).
• Cinematography: Tatsuo Suzuki; Production Design: Setsu Asakura; Music: Bun’ichi Nishimatsu.
• Release: 1971; Produced/Released by: ATG and Matsumoto Production.
The poster’s design is a dramatic two-sheet vertical montage: the top panel floats monochrome stills within swirling Edo-style cloud motifs, including a torment tableau staged on a crossbeam; the lower panel contrasts with a tender, close-lit embrace set against sutra-like calligraphy, while a woman brandishes a dagger between her teeth beneath the bold, blood-brush title 修羅. The stark imagery mirrors the film’s celebrated high-contrast black-and-white aesthetic and its descent into jealousy, madness, and killing.
This particular poster is a large-format STB (tatekan) — approximately twice the height of a standard B2 — and was typically displayed at the entrance of cinemas. STB posters were printed in limited numbers and survive in very small quantities, making them highly collectible.
