“Silent Movie” (サイレント・ムービー), Original Release Japanese Movie Poster 1976, B2 Size (51 × 73 cm) ZA74

Sale price $110.00

This is an original Japanese B2 poster printed in 1976 for the first Japanese theatrical release of Silent Movie (サイレント・ムービー), Mel Brooks’s loving spoof of silent‑era comedies, directed by and starring Brooks with Marty Feldman and Dom DeLuise, distributed in Japan by 20th Century Fox.

Film background
In the film, a washed‑up director named Mel Funn attempts a comeback by convincing a studio to back a new silent movie in the mid‑1970s. To save the failing studio from a corporate takeover, he and his hapless sidekicks try to pack the cast with real‑life superstars—resulting in a parade of cameos from Paul Newman, Burt Reynolds, Liza Minnelli, Anne Bancroft and others. Almost entirely without spoken dialogue, the film is filled with sight gags, slapstick and affectionate references to silent comedy, with the single spoken word becoming one of Brooks’s best‑known jokes.

Poster design
The Japanese B2 is a joyous explosion of caricature. At the centre, Brooks’s character, dressed as a movie studio bellhop, holds a finger to his lips in a classic “shh” gesture, framed by a gleaming film‑reel logo. Radiating outwards are oval portraits of the film’s celebrity guests—Paul Newman, Liza Minnelli, Burt Reynolds, Anne Bancroft, James Caan and others—each named in English. The huge red katakana title 「サイレント・ムービー」 cuts across the middle in three‑dimensional letters, while a frenzy of slapstick vignettes plays out along the bottom: boxing, dancing, car chases and a yellow roadster careening towards the viewer. It perfectly conveys the film’s star power and anything‑goes comedy.
