Japanese Poster Size Guide — B2, B1, STB, B0 & larger formats

A very rare original Japanese B3 nakazuri for Seijun Suzuki’s Smashing the O-Line, released by Nikkatsu on 25 June 1960. Designed to hang inside railway carriages, these landscape advertisements were intended for brief display. This example was used to promote the film at the time and appears to have been cut down from a larger advertisement. The dimensions above refer to the standard B3 format.

In Very Good condition for its age and original use. The principal portraits retain good colour and detail, and the vivid red title displays well despite the visible folds and edge wear.

Film background

Hiroyuki Nagato and Yūji Odaka play Katori and Nishina, friends at rival newspapers investigating the “Zero Line”, a smuggling route linking Hong Kong and Tokyo. When Nishina arrives to cover a police raid, Katori is already there. He has betrayed a former classmate to secure the exclusive.

Six years before Tokyo Drifter, Suzuki shot scenes along Yokohama’s Ōoka River, capturing the streets of the post-war port city in black-and-white widescreen.

Poster design

A man’s sidelong glance fills the left half of the sheet. On the right, a man in a brown suit points back towards him, while a woman in violet stands between them with her arms folded. The oversized red title stretches across the top, with the small characters ゼロ spelling out “zero” inside the numeral 0. The red-and-white NikkatsuScope banner sits above Suzuki’s vertical director credit.

The white lettering along the lower edge reads
「麻薬!! 売春!! 殺人鬼!! 暗夜に君臨する戦慄の密航ルート!!」
“Drugs! Prostitution! A killer! A terrifying smuggling route that rules the night!”

Condition

Very Good overall. Horizontal and vertical folds cross the sheet. The margins are uneven, with small nicks and handling creases most noticeable along the lower edge towards the right. The reverse shows age toning, scattered stains and a few red marks. Please review the front, reverse and close-up photographs for the full condition.
