“State of Siege” (戒厳令), Original Japanese Movie Poster, 1973 Japanese Release, Costa-Gavras / Yves Montand, B2 Size (c. 51 × 73 cm) T16

This is an original Japanese B2 theatrical poster for the 1973 Japanese release of State of Siege (État de siège), directed by Costa-Gavras and starring Yves Montand. Its photographic montage and bold orange title convey the atmosphere of surveillance, confrontation and political unrest at the centre of the film.

Written by Franco Solinas and Costa-Gavras, with music by Mikis Theodorakis, the film draws on the kidnapping of American official Dan Mitrione in Uruguay. Montand plays Philip Michael Santore, an American adviser whose capture prompts an investigation into his involvement with the country’s security apparatus. The drama examines foreign intervention, political violence and the exercise of state power. 

The Japanese design places a helmeted soldier holding a rifle prominently in the foreground. Behind him, a crowded street scene shows armed patrols, vehicles and civilians being searched or detained. A fallen figure adds to the tension, while a large portrait of Montand anchors the lower left.

The Japanese title 戒厳令 stretches across the lower section in vivid orange, contrasting with the smaller white French title. Red and blue promotional lettering fills the upper margin, and the vertical copy references Costa-Gavras’s earlier films ** Z and The Confession**. The bottom credits identify Fuji Eiga as the Japanese distributor and advertise the soundtrack on CBS/Sony Records.

A striking example of 1970s Japanese film-poster design, with particular appeal for collectors of Costa-Gavras, Yves Montand and European political cinema.

Condition: Excellent overall. Light handling creases, minor edge wear and gentle age toning are visible, particularly on the reverse. The printed image remains clear and the colours strong, giving the poster considerable impact for display.
