"TADANORI YOKOO - Nishinomiya Otani Memorial Art Museum", Japanese Contemporary Art Poster, Offset, Original Release 1990, B2 Size (51 x 73cm)
Original Offset Print on Paper, B2 Size (51 × 73 cm)
As issued for the 1990 Tadanori Yokoo Exhibition at the Nishinomiya Otani Memorial Art Museum
This is an original 1990 offset print by the iconic Japanese graphic designer and artist Tadanori Yokoo, created for his solo exhibition at the Nishinomiya Otani Memorial Art Museum. The work is a maximalist explosion of form, texture, and myth, showcasing Yokoo’s early 1990s visual language—a turbulent fusion of neo-expressionist chaos and narrative fragmentation.
At the center of the composition, two sharply dressed male figures—one in cobalt blue, the other in vivid mustard yellow—tumble and twist amid an onslaught of serpentine vines, floral eruptions, and geometric dissonance. They seem to be under attack by the writhing limbs of a mythic dragon, which coils through the chaos in a reference to classical battle iconography. Overlapping them are disjointed blocks of visual information: painted faces, warriors on horseback, petals, kaleidoscopic cells, and anatomical fragments.
Yokoo renders the image as a fractured grid, as if the poster itself were a mosaic assembled from separate pieces of media, memory, or dreams. The tiled effect enhances the sense of psychological rupture—perfectly aligning with the artist’s interest in time, perception, and altered states.
Commissioned for a regional museum show in 1990, this poster was issued in a small print run and was never commercially distributed. It is now considered one of the more elusive Yokoo exhibition prints, especially in such excellent condition. Unbacked, near mint, and printed with high saturation and clarity, this example represents a crucial era in Yokoo’s career—bridging his 1980s painterly explorations with the psychological intensity of his 1990s works.
A dazzling artifact for collectors of Japanese postmodernism, avant-garde printmaking, or the expansive world of Tadanori Yokoo.
