This is an original Japanese offset poster printed in 1975, designed by Tadanori Yokoo and titled 美麗秀逸（はいづか印刷） (Birei Shūitsu / Haizuka Printing) in The Complete Posters of Tadanori Yokoo (p.140, cat. 75-6).
What makes this already scarce A1 Yokoo poster even more desirable is the bold hand-signature in black ink—large, calligraphic, and visually striking within the red field. Hand-signed Yokoo posters from this era are genuinely uncommon, and this example presents as a strong collector’s copy.
Tadanori Yokoo – 美麗秀逸（はいづか印刷） (1975)
A blazing, ritual-charged dream-scene: the composition is dominated by an intense vermilion red, framed by an ornate turquoise-and-gold floral border reminiscent of Persian manuscript decoration. Within the red field, a mythic green figure—part dancer, part warrior—flies in from the upper right wielding an otherworldly, flame-tipped staff, while a second figure kneels in contemplation beside a brazier of fire that burns like a theatrical prop against a dark, sea-like horizon. A small seated figure floats centrally, calm and icon-like, creating a surreal stillness amid the implied ceremony and tension. The upper and lower calligraphic cartouches intensify the sense of invocation and cross-cultural collision—classic Yokoo: Pop intensity fused with historical ornament, spirituality, and staged drama.
Works like this sit squarely in the period when Yokoo was producing some of his most powerful poster imagery—pieces that read instantly from across a room, yet reward close inspection with detail, texture, and symbolic ambiguity.
Rarity
Large-format A1 Yokoo originals from the mid-1970s are increasingly hard to find in displayable condition, because most were pinned up, handled, or stored rolled for decades. Add the fact that this copy is hand signed, and it becomes a far rarer collector’s opportunity.
