"Ao Zukin" (The Blue Hood) – Original Japanese B1 Poster

状況劇場 / Jōkyō Gekijō (Situation Theatre), 1979
Art by Sunohara Katsuyoku (春原克行)

A striking and ultra-rare original B1-size poster for Ao Zukin (The Blue Hood) — an avant-garde stage production by Jūrō Kara’s legendary underground theatre troupe, Jōkyō Gekijō. This extraordinary artwork was illustrated by Sunohara Katsuyoku, the principal visual artist of the troupe and one of the most distinctive poster designers of Japan’s radical Angura (underground) theatre movement.

Sunohara’s signature surrealist style is on full display here: a spectral woman in a flowing hooded robe entwined with a black crow, her head emerging from a split pomegranate, while skeletal and botanical motifs swirl through a hallucinatory twilight landscape. The imagery evokes themes of death, sensuality, and transformation—echoing the intensity and mystery of Kara’s politically charged, dreamlike performances.

Performance details for Ao Zukin are printed on both sides, including stagings at Shinjuku Hanazono Shrine and Ikebukuro, with bold callouts for associated events such as the Calder World Exhibition at the Seibu Museum.

This poster is not only a scarce theatrical artifact but also a collectible work of Japanese psychedelic graphic art. Highly desirable among collectors of Japanese counterculture, vintage poster design, and postwar avant-garde art.
