Then and Now (Blonde Figure) – Tadanori Yokoo, 1991
Silkscreen Print | Edition of 150 | Hand-Signed | 80 x 120 cm

This visually arresting silkscreen print by acclaimed Japanese artist Tadanori Yokoo is part of his Then and Now series, created in 1991. Executed in a large 80 x 120 cm format and issued as a limited edition of 150, the print is hand-signed in pencil by the artist and numbered 29/150 in the lower margin. Yokoo's embossed seal appears in the bottom left, certifying its authenticity.

The composition is split between two distinct visual worlds:

  • On the left, a vivid, hyper-stylized blonde figure in hot pink dominates the scene, standing against an angular mountainous backdrop and ocean horizon. Her undergarments feature a photographic collage of the Arc de Triomphe, while a classical painting fragment floats above her head. The word “Then” appears beside her in Gothic script, emphasizing an artificial, postcard-like nostalgia.

  • On the right, rendered in fluid, expressive black and white, is a dramatic waterfall cascading down craggy rocks. Small inserted images—sepia portraits and vintage photos—linger like memories washed into the present. Gothic text reads “and Now,” completing the diptych’s conceptual contrast between historical projection and contemporary dissolution.

This work exemplifies Yokoo’s mastery of juxtaposition, layering eras, textures, and mediums to comment on identity, desire, and cultural memory.
