Then and Now (Shaving Woman) – Tadanori Yokoo, 1991
Silkscreen Print | Edition of 150 | Hand-Signed | 80 x 120 cm

This striking silkscreen print by legendary Japanese artist Tadanori Yokoo is part of his 1991 Then and Now series, a conceptual body of work exploring time, memory, and cultural duality through bold contrasts. Issued in a limited edition of 150, this piece is hand-signed by Yokoo and numbered 29/150, with his embossed seal featured in the lower margin.

Split into two distinct visual realms:

  • The left panel features a hyper-stylized pink figure—half-shaved, partially undressed, and surrounded by brightly colored commercial objects in a kitchen-like setting. With a razor in hand and a refrigerator in the background, the image evokes themes of identity, consumerism, and personal ritual. The Gothic text “Then and” floats above in deep red.

  • The right panel shifts into monochrome: a dramatic, cascading waterfall rendered in expressive black and white. Inserted within the flowing water are fragments of photographic art, including a vintage reclining nude and a traditional Japanese fish print. The word “Now” anchors the composition in blood-red Gothic script.

Yokoo’s Then and Now series encapsulates his postmodern, East-meets-West aesthetic—layering the absurd with the spiritual, pop with pathos.
