Then and Now (Motorbike) – Tadanori Yokoo, 1991
Silkscreen Print | Edition of 150 | Hand-Signed | 80 x 120 cm
This captivating silkscreen print titled Then and Now was created by visionary Japanese artist Tadanori Yokoo in 1991. Part of a conceptual diptych series, this large-format work was issued as a limited edition of 150, and is both hand-signed in pencil and individually numbered 29/150 in the lower margin. Yokoo’s embossed seal appears at bottom left, confirming its authenticity.
The composition is split in two:
-
The left side features a powerful pop-art tableau: a stylized woman rides a motorbike directly toward the viewer, flanked by identical black-suited men holding red lanterns, all against a pristine blue sky and road. The effect is surreal, humorous, and charged with commentary on modern conformity.
-
The right side, in stark contrast, presents a black-and-white waterfall rendered in a painterly, expressive style. Pinned to the waterfall are photographic fragments, including a mid-century bikini-clad woman, blurring the line between nostalgia and critique.
Yokoo's signature themes—identity, repetition, cultural collision—are all present in this deeply symbolic and highly collectible print.
