“Taxi Driver” (タクシー・ドライバー), Original Release Japanese Movie Poster 1976, B2 Size (51 × 73 cm) P273
This is an original Japanese B2 poster printed in 1976 for the first Japanese theatrical release of Taxi Driver, Martin Scorsese’s landmark urban nightmare starring Robert De Niro, with Jodie Foster, Cybill Shepherd, Harvey Keitel, Albert Brooks, and Peter Boyle. This example is the much rarer Japanese Version B design for the film, making it especially desirable for collectors who want something significantly less common than the standard Japanese release poster.
Film background
Released in 1976, Taxi Driver is one of the defining films of New Hollywood and one of the most powerful portraits of alienation ever put on screen. Written by Paul Schrader and directed by Martin Scorsese, it follows Travis Bickle, a lonely, unstable Vietnam veteran drifting through the nocturnal violence and moral decay of New York City. With Robert De Niro’s iconic central performance and Bernard Herrmann’s final score, the film became an instant landmark of American cinema and remains one of the most influential works of the 1970s.
Poster design
This Japanese Version B poster is strikingly different from the more familiar colour campaign imagery. Instead, it uses a stark black-and-white street photograph of Travis Bickle walking alone through Times Square, immediately emphasising the film’s loneliness, grime, and psychological tension rather than its sensational violence. The composition is unusually restrained and elegant, with the Japanese title タクシー・ドライバー anchored below the figure, the English title and credits beneath, and the 1976 Cannes Grand Prix award callout adding further prestige. It is a superb design—minimal, bleak, and deeply in tune with the film’s mood—and far rarer than the standard Japanese poster for the title.
