“The Addams Family” / 「アダムス・ファミリー」, Original First Release Japanese Movie Poster 1992, B2 Size (51 × 73 cm) ZA660

Sale price $110.00

This is an original Japanese B2 theatrical poster printed for the first Japanese release of The Addams Family / 「アダムス・ファミリー」, Barry Sonnenfeld’s 1991 supernatural dark comedy. The film opened in Japan in 1992, and this poster belongs to that original domestic theatrical campaign.

Stylish, macabre, and sharply comic, The Addams Family revived Charles Addams’ famous characters for a new generation and became one of the defining gothic comedies of the early 1990s. This Japanese poster captures the film’s mixture of elegance, eccentricity, and deadpan horror humour with a particularly strong ensemble design.

Film background
Directed by Barry Sonnenfeld, The Addams Family stars Anjelica Huston, Raul Julia, Christopher Lloyd, Christina Ricci, Jimmy Workman, Judith Malina, and Carel Struycken.

The film follows the return of the long-lost Uncle Fester to the Addams household — or perhaps an impostor placed there as part of a scheme to seize the family fortune. Built around the family’s gloriously inverted values, it turns gothic horror imagery into comedy, making the bizarre, morbid, and supernatural feel strangely domestic.

The film was a major commercial success and helped establish The Addams Family as a major 1990s screen property, followed by the equally celebrated sequel Addams Family Values.

Poster design
The poster presents the full Addams household in a formal group portrait against an ornate gothic interior. The image is framed by a marble-like background, trailing vines, spiderweb ornaments, and a black-and-white chequered floor, all echoing the family’s elegant but macabre world.

At the centre are Gomez and Morticia, posed with theatrical poise, surrounded by Wednesday, Pugsley, Uncle Fester, Grandmama, and Lurch. At the lower centre, Thing is highlighted in glowing isolation, crawling forward from the group and giving the design a strong comic focal point.

The English title The Addams Family appears in elaborate gothic lettering near the top, with the Japanese title 「アダムス・ファミリー」 printed boldly beneath it in red. The top Japanese tagline reads:

「私たちの、どこがヘンですか…。」
“What part of us is strange…?”

The angled campaign copy on the left promotes the film’s major box-office success and references the popularity of the theme song by Hammer. The overall design is elegant, playful, and immediately recognisable: gothic family portrait, black comedy, and early-1990s Japanese theatrical polish.
