“Yellow Submarine” (ビートルズ/イエロー・サブマリン), Original Japanese B2 Movie Poster 1968, B2 Size (c. 51 × 73 cm) C106 A
This is an original Japanese B2 theatrical poster printed for the 1968 release of Yellow Submarine, the psychedelic animated feature starring The Beatles’ likenesses and music. Directed by George Dunning, the film sends the band to the colourful realm of Pepperland to battle the music‑hating Blue Meanies.
Film background
Yellow Submarine combines pop‑art animation, surreal humour and classic Beatles songs into a unique cinematic experience. Numbers like “All You Need Is Love,” “Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds,” “Nowhere Man” and the title track appear in inventive visual set‑pieces, while the film’s message of love and music overcoming authoritarian gloom has made it a cult favourite for generations.
Poster design
The Japanese B2 design is a feast of late‑60s psychedelia. The upper half is filled with a field of black oval “holes” in a creamy sky, from which cartoon Beatles figures and Blue Meanies tumble and wave. A curved white banner carries the red Japanese title across the middle, leading down into rainbow‑coloured waves on which the bright yellow submarine sails. At the bottom, stylised versions of the band and Pepperland residents cavort among bold shapes and patterns, with the English logo “The Beatles Yellow Submarine” and subtitle “Nothing is real” anchoring the composition.
