This is an original Japanese poster printed in 1961 for the first release of Yotsuya Kaidan.
Yotsuya Kaidan (Japanese title: 四谷怪談) is a 1961 Japanese period horror film directed by Kenji Misumi and produced by Daiei Film. Adapted from the legendary kabuki ghost story by Nanboku Tsuruya IV, it tells the tale of Oiwa, a wronged woman whose betrayal and murder give rise to one of Japan’s most enduring supernatural legends.
This version stars Kazuo Hasegawa as Iemon and Yasuko Nakata as Oiwa. Uniquely among adaptations, this film casts Iemon and the other main characters in a more sympathetic light — depicting Iemon as a tragic figure manipulated into violence, who ultimately seeks vengeance against those who deceived him. The result is a stylized and dramatic retelling that blends ghost story and samurai revenge film.
While the horror elements are subdued compared to other adaptations, the film offers inventive ghostly visuals and one of the most endearing portrayals of Oiwa during her life. Directed with precision by Kenji Misumi, who would later be known for the Zatoichi and Lone Wolf and Cub series, this version stands out for its emotional tone and visual elegance.
