“The Giant Spider Invasion” / 「ジャイアント・スパイダー 大襲来」, Original Release Japanese Movie Poster 1975, B2 Size (51 × 73 cm) C280
This is an original Japanese B2 poster printed in 1975 for the first Japanese theatrical release of The Giant Spider Invasion, Bill Rebane’s exuberantly lurid science-fiction horror film. With its blazing painted artwork and full-throttle disaster imagery, this is a particularly appealing example of 1970s Japanese genre-poster design.
Film background
Directed by Bill Rebane, The Giant Spider Invasion is a cult American creature feature in which enormous extraterrestrial spiders descend upon rural Wisconsin, unleashing chaos and destruction. Produced at the height of 1970s drive-in horror and exploitation cinema, the film became one of the better-known giant-monster releases of its period and later achieved enduring afterlife as a cult B-movie favorite.
Poster design
This Japanese B2 offers exactly the kind of sensational visual impact collectors hope for from vintage creature-horror posters. The composition is dominated by a colossal black spider advancing over a city in flames, its fangs bared as helicopters, explosions, collapsing buildings, overturned cars, and panicked crowds fill the foreground. Searchlights slash through the deep blue night sky, intensifying the sense of scale and catastrophe. The title treatment is especially strong: the white katakana 「ジャイアント・スパイダー」 sits above the huge yellow kanji 「大襲来」, anchoring the lower section with bold graphic force. Altogether, it is an exceptionally dynamic and unmistakably theatrical design.
