“The Goonies” (グーニーズ), Original Release Japanese Movie Poster 1985, B2 Size (51 × 73 cm) – Noriyoshi Ohrai Artwork O652
This is an original Japanese B2 poster printed in 1985 for the first Japanese theatrical release of The Goonies, featuring spectacular artwork by legendary illustrator Noriyoshi Ohrai.
Film background
Produced by Steven Spielberg and directed by Richard Donner, The Goonies follows a group of kids from the “Goon Docks” neighbourhood who discover an old pirate map and set off on a wild underground adventure to find One-Eyed Willy’s treasure. Packed with booby traps, villains, camaraderie and pure 1980s charm, the film became a global favourite and remains one of the most beloved family adventure movies ever made—an essential title in the DNA of 80s pop culture.
Poster design
Noriyoshi Ohrai’s composition is one of the most iconic images associated with the film and a prime example of why his movie poster work is so sought-after. The Goonies huddle together in a dramatic pool of light, poised above a glittering hoard of gold and jewels, with the pirate mythos rendered as pure spectacle—treasure, skull imagery, and the looming cavernous world that feels both wondrous and dangerous. The entire scene is bathed in radiant yellows and fiery oranges, creating a heat-haze atmosphere of peril and discovery, while the Japanese typography and bold red 「グーニーズ」 title anchor the lower field and let Ohrai’s painting dominate the sheet.
Ohrai posters are collected in their own right, and The Goonies is among his most desirable—combining a universally loved Spielberg-era adventure with an explosive, display-perfect colour palette. Original Japanese B2s were never printed in huge numbers, and high-grade examples are increasingly difficult to source today.
