"House on Haunted Hill", Original Release Japanese Movie Poster 1959, Very Rare, B2 Size (51 × 73 cm) N245
This poster comes from a carefully kept private Japanese collection of 1950s–60s American cinema (including Rear Window 1954, Roman Holiday, BB, Hammer and Disney). The archive was stored in the dark for decades, so most pieces—this one included—survive in unusually fresh condition.
This is an original Japanese poster printed in 1959 by Allied Artists Japan(日本アライド・アーチスツ映画配給)for the first Japanese release of House on Haunted Hill (「地獄へつづく部屋」), William Castle’s cult thriller starring Vincent Price, Carol Ohmart, Richard Long, Alan Marshal, Carolyn Craig, and Elisha Cook Jr.—famed in the U.S. for Castle’s “Emergo” skeleton gimmick.
Printed for the film’s initial theatrical run, this scarce original B2(半裁)is sought after by Vincent Price and classic-horror collectors—a superb mid-century paper piece now well over six decades old.
Why this example is extraordinary (rarity & market)
Japanese B2s for 1950s American horror were issued in comparatively small numbers, and intact examples surface infrequently. Demand is driven by Price’s enduring popularity and the striking Japan-only typography and layout.
Poster design
An explosive photo-montage: a ghostly, wild-haired visage engulfs the upper left; the forbidding hilltop mansion looms beneath a stormy sky; Vincent Price stands at right, pistol in hand; and a terrified heroine screams in the foreground as a skeletal hand reaches across the frame. The English title “HOUSE ON HAUNTED HILL” sits above the ferocious brush-lettered Japanese logotype 「地獄へつづく部屋」 in vivid red. Vertical cast credits in bright yellow balance the composition, with the Allied Artists credit block at lower left.
