This is an original Japanese B2 poster issued in Japan for the theatrical release of The Libertine (1968/69 Japan release) — released in Japanese as 女性上位時代 (“Women’s Supremacy Era”). A stylish, adult European comedy-drama directed by Pasquale Festa Campanile and starring Catherine Spaak and Jean-Louis Trintignant, the film is a quintessential late-1960s slice of sophisticated continental cinema—flirtatious, satirical, and very much of its time. Japanese campaigns for these “art-erotica” imports were often extraordinarily well designed, and this is a standout example.
Poster design
A brilliantly graphic late-60s layout that mixes pop typography with cheeky, provocative star imagery. The left side is built from a vertical strip of colour-tinted stills—like a film strip collage—while the centre is dominated by the playful, headline image of a nude blonde woman perched on Trintignant’s back, smiling, with a cocktail table and bottles in the foreground. The Japanese copy at upper right leans into the film’s gender-role satire and “battle of the sexes” energy, while the title 「女性上位時代」 is rendered in sharp, modern pink type with a striped accent—pure period design.
