“Nuclear War: Lost Love” (原子力戦争 Lost Love), Original Japanese Movie Poster 1978, ATG, B2 Size (51.5 × 72.8 cm) — O536

Sale price $120.00

This is an original Japanese B2 theatrical poster printed for the 1978 release of Nuclear War: Lost Love, directed by Kazuo Kuroki and distributed by the Art Theatre Guild (ATG). Its intense colour and imposing photographic composition make it a striking example of Japanese independent film publicity from the late 1970s.

Drawing on Soichiro Tahara’s nonfiction work, the film combines a missing-person mystery with a politically charged investigation into the nuclear power industry. Yoshio Harada plays a man who arrives in a coastal town searching for his vanished lover. Reports of an apparent double suicide draw him into a troubling web of secrecy surrounding a nuclear power station.

The cast also includes Sayoko Yamaguchi, Jun Fubuki, Kei Sato and Eiji Okada, with a screenplay by Tatsuhiko Kamoi. Kuroki uses the structure of a thriller to explore suspicion, institutional power and the difficulty of uncovering the truth.

The poster is dominated by two figures walking towards the viewer, the woman occupying the foreground and the man following slightly behind. Their shadowed faces and dark clothing contrast with a dramatically coloured sky of scarlet, orange and pale yellow. The grainy photographic treatment gives the image a harsh, unsettled atmosphere.

A cool grey-green foreground offsets the burning sky, while the woman’s red dress visually connects her to the surrounding colour. The resulting image suggests both intimacy and isolation, echoing the tension between the film’s romantic subtitle and its larger political concerns.

Across the top, enormous cream-white Japanese title lettering outlined in black stretches almost from edge to edge. Directly beneath, “Lost Love” appears in blue italic lettering, introducing a sharp contrast with the warm sky.

The black promotional text at the upper left describes a man pursuing a lover who disappeared into a port town, confronting a sinister presence and the possibility of a trap or an accident cover-up. It promises a film that probes “the heart of the nuclear power issue.”

Cast and production credits run down the right side, with Kuroki’s directing credit prominently placed below. The small pink-red ATG emblem appears at the lower right.

An atmospheric piece for collectors of ATG cinema, Kazuo Kuroki, Yoshio Harada and politically engaged Japanese film.
