"The Mummy", Original Release Japanese Movie Poster 1959, Ultra Rare, B2 Size (51 × 73 cm) O847
This is an original Japanese poster printed in 1959 for the first release of The Mummy (ミイラの幽霊), Hammer Films’ atmospheric colour-horror directed by Terence Fisher and starring Peter Cushing and Christopher Lee—the powerhouse duo name-checked on the poster itself (“吸血鬼ドラキュラの…”). A key entry in Hammer’s golden-era Gothic cycle, the film reimagined the classic mummy myth with lurid visuals, relentless tension, and that unmistakable late-’50s studio bravado—released in Japan under the Universal International / Universal banner.
Printed for the film’s initial theatrical run, this scarce original B2 (半裁) poster is highly prized and commands a premium—an exceptional piece of mid-century Japanese paper ephemera now well over 65 years old.
Why this example is extraordinary (rarity & market)
-
Original 1959 first-release Japanese B2 for a cornerstone Hammer title
-
The Cushing / Lee pairing (explicitly promoted in the Japanese copy) makes it especially desirable to Hammer/monster collectors
-
Striking, iconic key art with Universal International mark—superb cross-market release history
-
Survival rate is low for genuine first-run B2s from this era, and this title is not commonly encountered
Poster design
An electrifying, high-contrast composition built for maximum impact: a towering, bandage-wrapped mummy dominates the frame beneath a stormy sky, slashed by a dramatic golden beam of light. At left, the bold Japanese title 「ミイラの幽霊」 runs vertically in dripping scarlet against deep black, separated by a jagged “torn paper” border—an inspired graphic touch that screams vintage kaiju/horror-era marketing. The right-side vertical copy promises pure pulp menace (“四千年の命を保ったミイラ男…恐怖の怪物!”), while the lower area delivers classic set-piece detail: tiny armed figures in the mist and a terrified woman in vivid red, all anchored by the Universal International globe mark. Bottom credits highlight 監督 テレンス・フィッシャー (Terence Fisher) and 製作 マイケル・カレラス (Michael Carreras), plus ハマー・プロダクション作品 / ユニヴァーサル配給.
