"The Umbrellas of Cherbourg", Original Re-Release Japanese Movie Poster 1972, B2 Size (51 cm x 73 cm) O256

Sale price $200.00

This is an original Japanese B2 poster printed for the 1972 domestic re-release of Jacques Demy’s landmark musical Les Parapluies de Cherbourg (1964). Starring Catherine Deneuve and Nino Castelnuovo, with an unforgettable score by Michel Legrand, the film is sung from beginning to end—an operatic love story whose bittersweet themes and mod color design reshaped the movie musical. It won the Grand Prix (Palme d’Or) at Cannes and cemented Deneuve’s status as a European screen icon, influencing directors, fashion, and contemporary pop musicals for decades.

Film background
Demy’s “sung-through” structure, Legrand’s recurring motifs (“I Will Wait for You”), and the bold art direction created a new cinematic language for romance. The film’s influence runs from later French musicals to Hollywood revivals of the genre and remains a touchstone for color-driven, music-led storytelling.

Poster design
A lyrical, collage-style composition centered on a radiant close-up of Catherine Deneuve fills the upper field, veiled by fine vertical “rain” lines. Below, Geneviève and Guy embrace under a lilac umbrella, while a procession of silhouetted figures with umbrellas drifts across the bottom, echoing the film’s title motif. At right, a small monochrome vignette of the station farewell foreshadows the story’s heartache. The turquoise brush-script Japanese title 「シェルブールの雨傘」 anchors the design, with cast names in Japanese type (カトリーヌ・ドヌーヴ / ニーノ・カステルヌオーヴォ etc.) and the standard 映倫 seal and release details along the foot—confirming this as the official B2 for the 1972 reissue.
