“New No Longer Human” (新・人間失格), Original Japanese Movie Poster 1978, ATG, B2 Size (51.5 × 72.8 cm) — C8

Sale price $120.00

This is an original Japanese B2 theatrical poster printed for the 1978 release of New No Longer Human, directed by Kohei Yoshidome and distributed by the Art Theatre Guild (ATG).

Drawing on the writings of Osamu Dazai, the film follows a young man who leaves Tokyo and enters a life of wandering, connecting his experiences with the landscape and atmosphere of Tsugaru, the northern Japanese region where Dazai was born. Hiroshi Omori leads the cast, which also includes Leo Morimoto, Hideko Yoshida and Tatsuo Shimokawa, with a screenplay by Tatsuo Kobayashi.

The poster brings together landscape, festival imagery and character portraits in a richly coloured photographic montage. Across the top, an enormous orange sunset illuminates a dark horizon, with two small figures walking beneath the open sky. Their silhouettes introduce a sense of distance and uncertainty that carries through the rest of the composition.

Below, a fierce warrior’s face from an illuminated Aomori festival float fills the left side. Its bold painted features contrast with the quieter expressions of the two figures beside it: a man looking back over his shoulder and a young woman wearing a red knitted hat, matching gloves and a white scarf. Small flecks of snow on her hat reinforce the wintry setting.

The lower section shifts into cool blue, showing a settlement of snow-covered rooftops and closely spaced utility poles. This contrast between the warm orange sky, vivid festival colours and blue winter landscape gives the poster its distinctive visual character.

The large Japanese title, 新・人間失格, stretches across the central montage in pale lettering with green shadows. Immediately above it, a yellow panel reads:

「太宰治作品集より」
“From the works of Osamu Dazai.”

The upper copy evokes the four seasons of Tsugaru and the wandering of youth, establishing the film’s connection to both Dazai’s literary world and the region’s landscape. The ATG logo, director’s credit and cast names appear over the snowy scene below.

An atmospheric example of 1970s ATG publicity, particularly appealing to collectors of Japanese independent cinema, literary adaptations and posters depicting northern Japan.

Condition: Excellent.

The poster retains strong colour and clear photographic detail. Light handling creases and paper undulations are visible, particularly on the reverse, with minor edge wear and a few small marks. Overall, it presents very well.
