"Twin Peaks: Fire Walk with Me (ツイン・ピークス/ローラ・パーマー最期の7日間)", Original First Japanese Release Theatrical Advance Nakazuri Poster 1992, Rare, B3 Size (c. 51.5 × 36.4 cm) N275
Sale price$250.00
This is a rare original Japanese B3 nakazuri poster printed for the first Japanese theatrical release of David Lynch’s Twin Peaks: Fire Walk with Me (ツイン・ピークス/ローラ・パーマー最期の7日間) in 1992.
This special advance design was produced while the film’s world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival was still forthcoming, as confirmed by the printed announcement:
「本年度カンヌ国際映画祭でワールドプレミア上映決定」 “World premiere confirmed for this year’s Cannes International Film Festival.”
Designed to hang horizontally inside Japanese railway carriages, nakazuri posters were displayed only briefly and were never intended for long-term preservation. Surviving examples—particularly for internationally important films and cult directors—are considerably scarcer than standard Japanese theatrical posters.
Film background
Written and directed by David Lynch, with Robert Engels as co-writer and music by Angelo Badalamenti, Fire Walk with Me transformed the mystery of the celebrated television series into a darker and more intimate theatrical feature.
The film begins with the investigation into the murder of Teresa Banks, led by FBI agents Chester Desmond and Sam Stanley, before turning to the final seven days in the life of Laura Palmer, played by Sheryl Lee. Rather than simply repeating the television series’ investigation, Lynch places Laura at the centre of the narrative, exploring the abuse, fear and supernatural forces concealed beneath the idyllic surface of Twin Peaks.
The cast includes Sheryl Lee, Ray Wise, Kyle MacLachlan, Chris Isaak, Kiefer Sutherland and David Bowie. Once controversial, the film has subsequently undergone a major critical reassessment and is now widely regarded as one of Lynch’s most emotionally powerful and uncompromising works.
Japan was among the first countries to release the film theatrically. It opened on 16 May 1992, the same day as its Cannes premiere and more than three months before its United States release, reflecting the extraordinary popularity of Twin Peaks in Japan at the beginning of the 1990s.
Poster design
The poster employs an unusually restrained horizontal composition dominated by open cream space and enormous black-and-red Japanese advertising copy. Its principal headline announces:
“All Japan is talking about it! The ultimate excitement that cannot be seen on video or television! At last, the Twin Peaks movie lifts the veil of secrecy!”
At the centre is the haunting blue-toned image of Laura Palmer wrapped in plastic, one of the defining images of the entire Twin Peaks mythology. Above it appears the equally provocative line:
「世界一美しい死体の謎、その答!!」 “The answer to the mystery of the world’s most beautiful corpse!”
Laura is framed by photographic portraits of Kyle MacLachlan, David Bowie, Kiefer Sutherland and Chris Isaak, immediately advertising both the returning television cast and the major new actors introduced in the film.
The brilliant red Japanese title anchors the lower portion of the design, accompanied by the distinctive English campaign title “TWIN PEAKS: THE LAST SEVEN DAYS OF LAURA PALMER.” The combination of stark typography, isolated portraits and Laura’s spectral cyan image creates a design that is both commercially direct and unmistakably Lynchian.
This poster is in excellent condition, especially considering that nakazuri posters were manufactured for very short-term display inside Japanese trains. The front presents extremely well, with strong colour, sharp typography and an exceptionally clean overall appearance. The verso is also clean overall (please refer to imagery of both the front and back of the exact poster for sale).
