"Ugetsu", Original Japanese Re-Release Movie Poster 1972 (for 1953 film), B2 Size (51 × 73 cm) O282

Sale price $250.00

This is an original Japanese B2 poster printed in 1972 for the domestic re-release of Kenji Mizoguchi’s ghostly war-era masterpiece Ugetsu (Ugetsu Monogatari, 1953). Starring Masayuki Mori, Machiko Kyō, and Kinuyo Tanaka, with luminous cinematography by Kazuo Miyagawa, the film won the Silver Lion at Venice and became a cornerstone of world cinema—celebrated for its floating camera, moral fable, and supernatural lyricism.

Film background
Adapted from Akinari Ueda’s Edo-period tales, the story follows two village men whose wartime ambitions lure them into illusions—one seduced by a noblewoman’s ghost, the other chasing fame. Mizoguchi’s humanist gaze and long takes shaped generations of filmmakers; Ugetsu consistently ranks among the greatest films ever made.

Poster design
An elegant, minimalist teal-and-indigo layout. A stylized portrait of the ghostly lady dominates the lower field—downcast eyes, palms together—while brush-script calligraphy 「雨月物語」 floats at right. Hand-written poem fragments drift across the top like mist. A small monochrome still of the leads sits near the footer, beside a vertical credit stack for Mizoguchi, writer Yoshikata Yoda, and cinematographer Kazuo Miyagawa. The Daiei mark and domestic re-release credits line the base.
