"Used Cars – Classy Chassis", Original Release Japanese Movie Door Panel Poster 1980, Door Panel Size (46 x 130cm) Q214

Sale price $275.00

This is a rare original Japanese theatrical door panel poster printed in 1980 for the domestic release of Used Cars, directed by Robert Zemeckis, co-written by Bob Gale, executive produced by Steven Spielberg, and starring Kurt Russell.

Unlike the standard Japanese B2 format, this poster was produced in the much scarcer door panel size, measuring approximately 46 x 130 cm. This narrow vertical format was designed for display on cinema entrance doors, lobby columns, or other tight theatrical advertising spaces. It is a highly unusual Japanese-issued format and a fantastic piece for collectors of cult cinema, Robert Zemeckis, Kurt Russell, and vintage theatrical display material.

The poster features an incredible exploitation-style design under the bold header “CLASSY CHASSIS”. A model in cut-off denim shorts and a cropped “TRUST US” t-shirt stands above a battered used car, with the film’s chrome-style Used Cars logo set across a giant yellow lemon at the bottom. The “lemon” is a perfect visual joke, referencing American slang for a defective car and tying directly into the film’s satirical look at dishonest car salesmen.

The design is pure late-1970s / early-1980s advertising satire: loud, provocative, funny, and deliberately sleazy. The phrase “Classy Chassis” works as a double entendre, referring both to a car frame and to vintage pin-up advertising language, while the stamped “TRUST US” slogan perfectly captures the film’s cynical humour.

The lower-right corner includes the Columbia Pictures logo and the Japanese Eirin approval mark 映倫 55171, confirming this as a Japanese theatrical poster intended for domestic cinema promotion. The copyright line reads © 1980 Columbia Pictures Industries, Inc.

Used Cars is a wild, fast-paced cult comedy about rival used-car lots locked in an outrageous battle of scams, sabotage, illegal advertising, and pure chaos. Although it was not a major box-office hit on release, the film has since built a strong cult following and is now recognised as an early showcase of Zemeckis’s manic comic energy before his later mainstream success with Back to the Future.

This poster is especially desirable because Japanese theatrical door panels were produced in far smaller quantities than standard posters, and surviving examples are very difficult to find today — particularly in this size and with such a striking design.

It is over 45 years old!

This poster is in excellent condition for its age and format, with visible original fold lines and light signs of handling consistent with a vintage theatrical door panel. It presents beautifully, with strong colour and fantastic visual impact. Please refer carefully to the imagery, showing both the front and back, as this is the exact poster that is for sale.

It is not a reproduction and not a reprint.
