“Wedlock” / 「ウェドロック」, Original Japanese Movie Poster 1991, B2 Size (51 × 73 cm) ZA940
This is an original Japanese B2 theatrical poster printed in 1991 for Wedlock / 「ウェドロック」, the futuristic sci-fi action thriller directed by Lewis Teague and starring Rutger Hauer, Mimi Rogers, Joan Chen, James Remar, and Stephen Tobolowsky.
A bold early-1990s Japanese action poster, this design is especially striking for its large neon-tinted portrait of Rutger Hauer, the explosive collar motif, and its oversized metallic Japanese title treatment.
Film background
Set in a near-future prison system, Wedlock follows diamond thief Frank Warren, who is betrayed by his partners and sent to a high-security facility where inmates are fitted with electronic collars. Each collar contains an explosive charge and is linked to another prisoner’s unknown matching device; if the paired inmates move too far apart, both collars detonate.
The film combines prison-break suspense, science-fiction technology, and action-thriller pacing, with Rutger Hauer in one of his signature early-1990s genre roles. The cast also includes Mimi Rogers as the inmate tied to his escape attempt and Joan Chen in a key supporting role.
Poster design
The poster has a powerful, high-impact composition. The upper half is dominated by a huge stylised portrait of Rutger Hauer, rendered in intense red, blue, and yellow tones. Around his neck is the film’s central device: the futuristic explosive collar, complete with barcode detailing.
The lower section presents a montage of action imagery: prison-break scenes, police cars, helicopters, explosions, armed figures, and character cut-outs, giving the poster the feel of a fast-moving techno-thriller.
The bold vertical copy at right reads:
「装着後、脱出不可能 NO ESCAPE!!」
“Once equipped, escape is impossible. NO ESCAPE!!”
The white text at left promotes the premise:
「小型爆弾が埋め込まれた電子の首輪“ウェドロック”――脱出成功率0%に挑むR.ハウアー最新作!!」
“An electronic collar embedded with a miniature bomb: ‘Wedlock’ — Rutger Hauer’s latest work, challenging a 0% escape success rate.”
At the bottom, the large silver-metallic Japanese title 「ウェドロック」 gives the poster its strongest graphic anchor, with the smaller English WEDLOCK logo appearing at lower left.
