“Zorro” (アラン・ドロンのゾロ), Original Japanese First-Release Movie Poster 1975, B2 Size (51 × 73 cm) — A257
This is an original Japanese B2 poster printed in 1975 for the first Japanese theatrical release of Zorro, starring Alain Delon and directed by Duccio Tessari. Released in Japan as Alain Delon’s Zorro, this colourful adventure offered audiences the French star as the legendary masked swordsman. The Japanese campaign prominently celebrated the production as Delon’s 50th starring film, a detail incorporated into the poster’s bold design.
Film background
Inspired by Johnston McCulley’s enduring hero, the film follows Diego as he assumes the identity of a murdered friend and confronts a corrupt regime. Concealing his abilities behind an unthreatening public persona, he becomes Zorro to defend the oppressed and challenge the ruthless Colonel Huerta.
With Ottavia Piccolo and Stanley Baker alongside Delon, the film combines swordplay, disguise, romance and comedy. Its adventurous spirit gives Delon an opportunity to display a lighter, more playful side alongside his familiar screen intensity.
Poster design
An enormous close-up of Delon’s masked face dominates the upper half, his eyes staring directly out beneath the brim of Zorro’s black hat. A second, full-length image places him at the centre with sword extended, his black costume dramatically accented by the red lining of his cape.
Surrounding scenes show leaping figures, sword fights, mounted riders and a carriage chase, creating a lively montage of the film’s action. The cream background allows the black costumes and large red Japanese brush lettering to stand out with particular clarity.
Across the top, an oversized orange “50” and turquoise lettering announce the career milestone. The blue Towa emblem completes this distinctive Japanese campaign design—an appealing piece for collectors of Alain Delon and classic adventure cinema.
