ZOUZOU (1934) / “Amber Dancer” (琥珀の舞姫) — Japanese B2 (c. 51 × 73 cm), 1949 Toho / Towa Shōji Re‑Release — Josephine Baker & Jean Gabin

Rarity
We can locate no public sale records for this Japanese 1949 re‑release B2. Japanese pre‑/immediate‑post‑war Baker material is scarcely documented; this is the first example we’ve seen in the market. A near unique survivor in excellent condition.

Release details

  • Country: Japan

  • Year: 1949 post‑war re‑release (retitled from the 1935 Japanese première 「はだかの女王」).

  • Presenter / Distributor: Towa Shōji (東和商事) / Toho Co., Ltd. (東宝株式會社) — printed exactly as such on the poster; diamond ToWa SHOJI K.K. logo at lower margin. Note: “Towa Shōji” usage (not “Toho‑Towa”) is pre‑1951, supporting the 1949 reissue date.

  • Size: B2 —  c. 51.5 × 72.8 cm (period Japanese standard).

  • Printing: Period litho/offset on thin Japanese stock.

Film background
Marc Allégret’s Zouzou (1934) was Josephine Baker’s first talking feature, opposite a young Jean Gabin. Japan first released it in Dec 1935 as 「はだかの女王」, then re‑issued it in 1949 as 「琥珀の舞姫」 on the Toho circuit.

Poster design & typography (as seen on this exact example)

  • Central trapeze vignette of Josephine Baker, flanked by silhouette dancers and a portrait of Jean Gabin.

  • Large brush‑style kanji 「琥珀の舞姫」 with turquoise furigana aids (“こ / はく / の”).

  • Above the title in small red type: 「『はだかの女王』改題 ZOUZOU」 (“retitled from Hadaka no Joō”).

  • Left text block includes the period taglines you can read on your close‑ups:
    「海から来た男ギャバン、踊る黒ダイヤのベーカー、本場パリの黄金レビュー」
    「監督 マルク・アレグレ 音楽 G・ヴァン・パリ」

  • Footer: 「東和商事提供・東宝株式會社配給」 with diamond ToWa SHOJI K.K. emblem and small round 東宝 seal.

Condition (completely unrestored)

  • Overall grade: Very Good / Excellent — strong presentation, vibrant colour.
