Original Japanese Michelangelo Antonioni Movie Posters

Michelangelo Antonioni (1912–2007) was one of the defining filmmakers of postwar European cinema, celebrated for his modernist compositions, psychological ambiguity and profound examinations of alienation, desire and contemporary life. His visually meticulous films transformed cinematic language and continue to influence filmmakers, photographers and artists worldwide.

Antonioni achieved international recognition through the linked masterpieces L’Avventura (1960), La Notte (1961) and L’Eclisse (1962), followed by the extraordinary colour experiments of Red Desert (1964). His English-language film Blow-Up (1966) became one of the defining works of 1960s cinema, while Zabriskie Point (1970) and The Passenger (1975) extended his distinctive visual approach into new landscapes and cultural settings.

Japan Poster Shop’s collection brings together original Japanese Michelangelo Antonioni movie posters spanning some of the director’s most celebrated films. The collection includes original theatrical and promotional designs for L’Avventura, La Notte, Blow-Up, Zabriskie Point and other important works from his career.

Japanese poster campaigns for Antonioni’s films are particularly admired for their refined typography, striking photographic compositions, bold colour and alternative artwork. These designs often differ considerably from their Italian, British and American counterparts, offering a distinctive Japanese interpretation of some of European cinema’s most influential films.

Our holdings encompass original Japanese first-release material where available, later theatrical campaigns, promotional posters and scarce variants. Earlier examples from the 1960s and 1970s are increasingly difficult to acquire, particularly in strong display condition.

Each poster is carefully sourced and individually catalogued in Japan, with attention to authenticity, Japanese release history, format, condition and rarity. Together, these works document Antonioni’s cinematic legacy through the distinctive visual culture of Japanese theatrical advertising.
