“Ghost in the Shell” (攻殻機動隊), Original Japanese Movie Poster 1995, Rare, B2 Size (c. 51 × 73 cm) M55
A rare original Japanese B2 poster for Mamoru Oshii’s Ghost in the Shell, printed for its first theatrical release in 1995. The lettering down the right edge announces the film’s worldwide release that November, while the lower margin advertises its world premiere at the Tokyo International Fantastic Film Festival ’95.
In excellent condition, with strong colours and light spotting around the upper-right title lettering. The portrait retains its fine detail, and once framed, this poster will display excellently.
Film background
Adapted from Masamune Shirow’s manga, Ghost in the Shell follows Major Motoko Kusanagi, a cyborg officer with Public Security Section 9, as she tracks a mysterious hacker known as the Puppet Master. In the film’s vision of 2029, a hacker can enter another person’s mind and leave them with vivid memories of a life they never lived.
For Kusanagi, whose body is already artificial, the investigation raises a more personal question about how much of herself she can recognise through memory alone. Between the action sequences, Oshii lets the story pause as Kenji Kawai’s choral score accompanies views of the city’s canals, shop windows and rain-soaked streets.
Poster design
A pale-haired, blue-eyed cyborg looks directly out from the sheet. Fine white circuit traces begin beneath one eye and fan across the cheek, shoulders and chest, echoing the teal circuit board behind the figure. The lower-left margin credits Hiroyuki Okiura, the film’s character designer, with the illustration and Thesedays with the poster design.
The English title spans the width of the sheet, with IN THE set inside a black triangle. Beneath the Japanese title is the English line “People love machines in 2029 A.D.” Above it all, the red Japanese headline uses the small phonetic lettering ダイブ (dive) to give the verb its distinctive reading.
「彼女は電脳の海に潜入する」
“She dives into the sea of cyberspace.”
Condition
Excellent overall. A few light brown spots are visible against the pale background around the word SHELL, as shown in the close-up photograph. The central artwork retains rich colour and crisp linework, and the reverse is generally clean. Please review the front, reverse and detail photographs for the full condition of the exact poster offered.
