Japanese Poster Size Guide — B2, B1, STB, B0 & larger formats

An original Japanese promotional poster for Shinji Nishikawa’s Drawing Book of Godzilla, published by Yōsensha in June 2016. For Nishikawa’s book signing at Shosen Grande in Tokyo on 9 June 2016, the bookshop offered attendees an A1 poster of his cover illustration. This landscape sheet presents that artwork across a full 83 cm.

Godzilla’s charcoal-black scales and violet dorsal plates stand out against the pale background, with fine detail visible down to the teeth on Biollante’s smallest tendril.

Artist and publication background

Nishikawa joined the Godzilla film series on Godzilla vs. Biollante (1989), helping to shape the plant monster’s final form. He later redesigned Godzilla for Godzilla 2000: Millennium (1999) and designed Kiryu, the armoured Mechagodzilla seen here, for Godzilla Against Mechagodzilla (2002). His 240-page art book brings together around 800 design drawings and 100 illustrations.

Poster design

Godzilla faces left with jaws open and both claws raised. The jagged plates along his back lead the eye to Biollante, whose green jaws rise above a glowing orange core. At the upper right, Mecha-King Ghidorah’s mechanical head sits between two golden dragon heads. Below them, Kiryu’s silver armour overlaps the blue-and-gold eyespots on Armor Mothra’s wings. The English title and a small Toho copyright credit occupy the open space at the upper left.

Condition

The colours are strong and the fine linework is clear. A few shallow handling creases are visible on the plain reverse, chiefly towards the edges. Please review the front and reverse photographs for the full condition.
