RESERVED

An original Japanese B2 theatrical poster for
Jacques Tati’s PlayTime, released in Japan by Shochiku Eihai on 14 June 1969. The lower-right corner advertises the 70 mm colour presentation. The nearby 1968 date refers to the film’s French academy award.

In Excellent condition, with vivid colour in Hulot’s green hat, the miniature cars and the Japanese title.

Film background

For his 1967 comedy, Tati built “Tativille”, a city set on the outskirts of Paris. His familiar Monsieur Hulot arrives for an appointment and loses his bearings in a maze of glass offices. As his path crosses that of an American tourist, played by Barbara Dennek, the action moves to the opening night of the Royal Garden restaurant, where the guests arrive before the workmen have finished. Tati uses the wide frame to let several jokes unfold at once, leaving the viewer to decide where to look.

Poster design

An enormous line drawing of Hulot leans into a skyline made from photographic cut-outs. His pipe points towards the tallest tower, while the Eiffel Tower peeks through a gap in the office blocks behind his back. Below, a pink-and-white bus threads through brightly coloured cars, one carrying a ladder on its roof. The Japanese title stretches across the foot of the sheet in letters that pick up the colours of the traffic.

The burgundy text above the skyline reads
「喜劇の詩人――ジャック・タチがコンピューター時代にまきおこす大型コメディ!」
“Jacques Tati, the poet of comedy, stirs up a grand comedy for the computer age!”

Condition

Excellent overall. Light brown spotting is visible in the pale sky, particularly along the upper-right edge shown in the detail photograph. Please review the front, reverse and close-up photographs for the full condition.
