“Symphony for a Massacre” (皆殺しのシンフォニー), Original Japanese First-Release Movie Poster 1967, B2 Size (c. 51.5 × 72.8 cm) ZA1279
An original Japanese B2 theatrical poster for Jacques Deray’s Symphonie pour un massacre. First shown in France in 1963, the film opened in Japan on 4 February 1967. The credits at the lower left identify Seven Arts as presenter and Taihei Film as the Japanese distributor.
In Very Good / Excellent condition, with vivid red title lettering and warm-toned photographic portraits against a cream ground.
Film background
Five men pool half a million dollars to buy a shipment of narcotics in Marseille. Jean Rochefort plays Jabeke, who sees a chance to take the money for himself while his partners still trust him. Deray adapted Alain Reynaud-Fourton’s novel Les Mystifiés with Claude Sautet and José Giovanni, who also appears as one of the five. Claude Renoir photographed the film in black and white, and Michel Magne composed its jazz score.
Poster design
At the upper left, a man in a dark overcoat steps into view carrying a tan leather case. His face is cropped out. A car with its door open, bundles of banknotes and a wide-eyed face beside a trail of blood suggest what happens to the money. Across the centre, the Japanese title cuts through the montage in angular red lettering, with the French title printed beneath in pale blue.
The red publicity line at the upper right picks up the musical theme of the title.
「血は血を呼ぶ 札束50万ドル! パリの暗黒街に流れる皆殺しのメロディ……」
“Blood calls for blood. Half a million dollars in cash! A melody of slaughter echoes through the Paris underworld…”
Condition
Very Good / Excellent overall. Horizontal fold lines and light handling creases are visible. Three small pieces of aged tape remain along the upper fold on the reverse, with rectangular brown marks showing through on the front. A short tear extends upwards from the lower edge into the large portrait. Please review the full front, reverse and detail photographs for the condition of this copy.
