“Zatōichi” (座頭市), Original Release Japanese Movie Poster 2003, B2 Size (51 × 73 cm) I52

Sale price $115.00

This is an original Japanese B2 theatrical poster printed in 2003 for the first Japanese release of Zatōichi (座頭市), written, directed by, and starring Takeshi Kitano (北野武). A major modern revival of the legendary blind swordsman character, Kitano’s film became an international hit—blending razor-sharp chanbara action with deadpan comedy, sudden violence, and stylised musical rhythm.

Film background
Released in 2003, Zatōichi reimagines the classic Zatoichi mythos for a new era: the wandering masseur arrives in a town controlled by gangs, crossing paths with ronin, farmers, and two geisha siblings hiding their own vengeance. Kitano’s take is famous for its tonal agility—switching from quiet tension to explosive swordplay—while showcasing crisp choreography and a bold visual style that helped reintroduce Zatoichi to global audiences.

Poster design
A stunning, high-impact Japanese design dominated by a textured field of burnt orange and blood-red—like scratched lacquer or oxidised metal—against which Kitano’s Zatoichi appears mid-motion, blade drawn, coat flaring, one foot bare. The enormous brush-calligraphy 座頭市 anchors the bottom with classic authority, while the vertical tagline 最強。 (“The strongest.”) at top right gives it a minimalist punch. It’s a powerful, frame-ready B2 that perfectly matches the film’s mix of tradition and modern aggression.
