Original Japanese Takeshi Kitano Movie Posters

Explore Japan Poster Shop’s extensive collection of original Japanese Takeshi Kitano movie posters, featuring rare first-release theatrical artwork, highly collectible B1 and B2 formats and distinctive Japanese promotional designs associated with one of the most influential filmmakers in contemporary Japanese cinema.

Takeshi Kitano (北野武, born 1947), internationally recognised as both a director and actor and also known by his performing name Beat Takeshi (ビートたけし), occupies a singular position in Japanese cinema. Celebrated for his minimalist compositions, sudden eruptions of violence, understated humour and deeply humanistic storytelling, Kitano has created some of the most distinctive and internationally acclaimed Japanese films of the past four decades.

His directorial debut, Violent Cop (1989), established the uncompromising visual style that would become a defining characteristic of his filmmaking. Subsequent works including Boiling Point (1990), A Scene at the Sea (1991), Sonatine (1993), Getting Any? (1995), Kids Return (1996) and Hana-bi (1997) demonstrated an extraordinary range, combining crime cinema, comedy, melancholy and poetic visual storytelling.

Hana-bi, awarded the Golden Lion at the 1997 Venice Film Festival, marked a defining moment in Kitano’s international recognition. His later films, including Kikujiro (1999), Brother (2000), Dolls (2002), Zatoichi (2003) and the Outrage trilogy (2010–2017), further established his reputation as one of Japan’s most significant contemporary filmmakers.

Our collection encompasses an extensive selection of original Japanese theatrical posters for Takeshi Kitano’s films, including rare first-release examples, distinctive advance promotional designs and particularly desirable B1 posters (approximately 72 × 103 cm) alongside the standard B2 format (approximately 51 × 73 cm).

Of particular significance are the original Japanese poster campaigns for Sonatine, Hana-bi, Violent Cop, Kids Return, Kikujiro and the Outrage series. Many feature striking photographic portraits, restrained compositions, expressive Japanese typography and the unmistakable visual identity associated with Kitano’s cinema.

Original Japanese B1 theatrical posters are especially desirable among serious collectors. Their larger dimensions, relatively limited distribution and lower survival rates make exceptional examples considerably more difficult to acquire than standard B2 posters. Our holdings include rare designs, unused examples and scarce promotional variants representing different periods of Kitano’s career.

Beyond his work as a director, Kitano has also appeared in important productions by other filmmakers, including Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence (1983) and Battle Royale (2000), reflecting his remarkable versatility and enduring cultural significance.

These original Japanese posters represent an important chapter in the history of contemporary Japanese cinema, theatrical advertising and graphic design, preserving the visual identity of one of Japan’s most internationally recognised filmmakers.

Every poster offered by Japan Poster Shop is an authentic original, carefully sourced in Japan and individually catalogued. We do not sell reproductions. All posters are accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity, with worldwide DHL Express shipping available from our gallery in Tokyo.
