This is an original Japanese B2 poster printed in 1972 for the first Japanese theatrical release of Jeremiah Johnson, Sydney Pollack’s landmark Western adventure starring Robert Redford. A superbly elegant and highly displayable Japanese design, this poster strips the film down to its central image: the solitary mountain man standing in snow, armed and self-contained, already half-transformed into legend.

Film background
Released in 1972, Jeremiah Johnson stars Robert Redford as a Mexican-American War veteran who turns away from civilisation and heads into the Rocky Mountains in search of isolation, survival, and a harder, more elemental life. Directed by Sydney Pollack, the film became one of the defining revisionist Westerns of its era—less interested in frontier heroics than in endurance, solitude, and the uneasy relationship between man and wilderness. Quiet, atmospheric, and visually magnificent, it remains one of Redford’s most iconic performances and one of the most admired American adventure films of the 1970s.

Poster design
This Japanese poster is a masterclass in restraint. Against a vast white ground, Redford appears alone in rugged mountain gear—wide-brimmed hat, rifle, traps in hand, heavy furs at his legs—leaving a long trail of snowy footprints behind him. The enormous blue Japanese title 大いなる勇者 at the top gives the composition strong graphic authority, while the emptiness around the figure beautifully reinforces the film’s themes of wilderness, distance, and solitary survival.
