"2001: A Space Odyssey" (2001年宇宙の旅), Original Re-Release Japanese Movie Poster 1978, B2 Size (51 × 73 cm) E10
This is an original Japanese B2 theatrical poster printed in 1978 for the Japanese re-release of 2001: A Space Odyssey (2001年宇宙の旅), Stanley Kubrick’s towering science-fiction masterpiece, starring Keir Dullea and Gary Lockwood. Released a decade earlier, the film’s return to cinemas reflects its status as a once-in-a-generation landmark—still seen as the definitive “serious” space film and a pinnacle of visual storytelling.
Design
A spectacular Japan-only design centred on the film’s most iconic spacecraft imagery: the spinning space station and docked shuttle dominate the upper field in crisp detail against deep space, with the English title 2001: a space odyssey printed in vivid yellow. Along the left margin, bold red Japanese copy makes an extraordinary statement—positioning the film as a timeless masterpiece and even quoting the Star Wars connection, effectively declaring that “before Star Wars, this existed.” The lower section is anchored by the huge red title 2001年宇宙の旅, giving the sheet immense presence once framed. Elegant, intellectual, and unmistakably late-1970s Japanese graphic cinema design.
